KENPRO SDGs-Based Renewable Energy Impact

Introduction

Renewable energy interventions implemented by Kenya Projects Organization (KENPRO) aim to expand access to sustainable and affordable energy solutions while addressing pressing environmental and socio-economic challenges affecting communities in Kenya and the wider region. Many households in developing countries continue to rely on traditional biomass fuels such as firewood and charcoal for cooking and kerosene for lighting. These energy sources contribute to indoor air pollution, environmental degradation, and increased vulnerability to climate change.

In response to these challenges, KENPRO promotes renewable energy solutions that support cleaner energy production, improved household health, and sustainable environmental management. Through community-centered interventions and practical energy innovations, the organization seeks to enhance access to modern energy services while supporting climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods.

KENPRO’s renewable energy interventions are implemented through two key programme components: the KENPRO Biogas Program and the KENPRO Solar Program. These programmes provide complementary solutions that address both household cooking energy needs and electricity access for homes, farms, schools, and small enterprises.

KENPRO Renewable Energy Programs

KENPRO Biogas Program

The KENPRO Biogas Program promotes the adoption of biogas technology as a clean and renewable source of cooking energy. The programme supports both portable biogas plants and fixed dome biogas digesters, enabling households and institutions to convert organic waste into renewable energy for cooking and other household energy needs.

Portable biogas systems are designed to provide flexible and affordable clean cooking solutions. Unlike conventional fixed systems that require permanent underground construction, portable systems are modular and easy to install, making them suitable for both rural and peri-urban households. These systems utilize livestock manure and organic household waste to produce biogas that can be used for cooking, offering a practical energy alternative for households with limited space or lower installation capacity.

In addition to portable systems, the programme promotes fixed dome biogas plants that are commonly installed in rural farms and institutions with adequate livestock and organic waste resources. These underground digesters provide a long-term solution for biogas production and can supply reliable cooking energy for many years.

Both portable and fixed dome systems produce bio-slurry, a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer that improves soil fertility and agricultural productivity. By converting animal manure and organic waste into energy and fertilizer, the programme supports integrated household energy and agricultural sustainability.

KENPRO Solar Program

The KENPRO Solar Program focuses on expanding access to renewable electricity through the promotion of solar energy technologies for households, schools, and community institutions. Solar energy provides a reliable and environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuel–based energy sources and traditional lighting methods such as kerosene lamps.

The programme promotes the adoption of solar home systems, solar lighting solutions, and solar-powered applications that support household energy needs such as lighting, phone charging, and small appliances. Solar energy solutions are particularly important in rural and off-grid areas where access to electricity infrastructure remains limited or unreliable.

Through the promotion of solar technologies, the programme enhances access to electricity for education, communication, and small-scale economic activities. Solar lighting improves study conditions for students, increases household safety at night, and supports small businesses that require reliable lighting and basic electrical power.

The KENPRO Solar Program also contributes to building community awareness and technical capacity in renewable energy technologies, encouraging sustainable energy practices at the household and community levels.

Impact Based on Sustainable Development Goals

The renewable energy interventions implemented through the KENPRO Biogas Program and the KENPRO Solar Program contribute to the achievement of several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being

Traditional cooking fuels such as firewood and charcoal generate harmful indoor air pollution that contributes to respiratory diseases and other health complications. The adoption of biogas for cooking reduces exposure to smoke and toxic emissions, improving indoor air quality and promoting better health outcomes for households.

Solar energy solutions also reduce reliance on kerosene lamps, which produce harmful fumes and pose fire risks in households.

SDG 5 – Gender Equality

Women and girls are often responsible for collecting firewood and preparing meals in many households. The availability of biogas for cooking reduces the time and effort required to collect fuel, enabling women and girls to engage in education, income-generating activities, and community participation.

Improved lighting through solar energy also supports safer household environments and better learning opportunities for girls and young women.

SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy

The KENPRO Biogas and Solar Programs expand access to modern, renewable energy services for households and institutions. Biogas systems provide decentralized clean cooking energy, while solar technologies provide renewable electricity for lighting and small appliances. Together, these solutions contribute to increasing access to affordable and sustainable energy.

SDG 13 – Climate Action

Renewable energy technologies promoted through the programmes help reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with charcoal production, firewood use, and kerosene consumption. Biogas systems convert organic waste into energy, reducing methane emissions from decomposing organic materials, while solar energy produces electricity without carbon emissions.

SDG 15 – Life on Land

By reducing reliance on firewood and charcoal, the renewable energy interventions contribute to lowering pressure on forest resources and reducing deforestation. The use of bio-slurry from biogas systems also supports sustainable agriculture by improving soil fertility and reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers.


Conclusion

Through the implementation of the KENPRO Biogas Program and the KENPRO Solar Program, Kenya Projects Organization (KENPRO) is contributing to the expansion of renewable energy access and the promotion of sustainable development in Kenya and beyond. These programmes demonstrate how locally appropriate renewable energy technologies can address interconnected challenges of energy poverty, environmental degradation, and climate change.

By promoting decentralized clean energy solutions for cooking and electricity, KENPRO supports improved household health, enhanced livelihoods, reduced environmental pressure on natural resources, and strengthened climate resilience. Together, these initiatives contribute meaningfully to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, helping communities transition toward more sustainable and inclusive energy systems.
