Abstract: Any organization’s goal is to be effective, and efficient, attain its objectives and exceed in performance. The need to be successful and have a more remarkable performance has created the need for regular tracking of projects to ensure the project follows the right course for optimal performance. Monitoring and evaluation has been identified as a relevant practice for project success. However, the effects of project monitoring and evaluation on project sustainability remains unknown. The study sought to establish the effects of monitoring and evaluation practices on the sustainability of projects

INTRODUCTION
Monitoring and evaluation system is important in project management since its obligation calls for project impact and sustainability (Nyaburiri, 2019). All projects endure to meet a specified need. In the ever-evolving environment, there is the essence of making timely and informed decisions which not only integrate sustainable needs but also seeks to satisfy the expectations of stakeholders (Njue & Mulwa, 2022). Monitoring and evaluation are among the project management functions that not only seek to address the constraints hampering project success but also provide avenue for continuous learning and improvement( Njue & Mulwa, 2022) yet sustainability of projects is still a major challenge in many developing projects (Vanessa & Gitahi, 2023). Â
EFFECT OF MONITORING AND EVALUATION
According to Biwott, Egesa & Ngeywo (2017), Monitoring and Evaluation helps project managers in keeping track the implementation of the projects and its prudence in the utilization of the resources. It provides decision makers with a strategy to plan for sustainability of the projects and guidance for future endeavors. Sustainability is key to stakeholders who in real sense need to be involved throughout the project and program cycles. Unclear monitoring and evaluation systems not only affect the project outcome but also the sustainability in the community. It is clear that project sustainability is reverberated in the capacity of community with coping change and adjusts to innovative situations. The use of monitoring and evaluation systems should be linked to the impact and sustainability of the project (Nyaburiri, 2019).
Effective monitoring and evaluation practices play a pivotal role in the success of development projects , facilitating the identification of challenges and timely adjustments. Comprehensive environmental impact assessments and active stakeholder engagement are cornerstones of responsible and sustainable development(Borisch, Amer, Jahaf,2023). These strategies aim to empower stakeholders and foster a culture of continuous improvement in M&E practices, ultimately leading to better project outcomes and sustainable development (Otundo, 2024).
Monitoring and Evaluation encapsulates the systematic processes, mechanisms and tools by which project progress is tracked (Magutu, 2013). It has become an indispensable instrument of project management and the life-blood of successful project implementation thus providing management and other stakeholders with valuable feedback on progress, deviations and their courses. Therefore it affords the opportunity for necessary correctional interventions that enhance achievement of set objectives (Wayne, 2002).Â
Monitoring and evaluation are among the project management functions that not only seek to address the constraints hampering project success but also provide avenue for continuous learning and improvement (Njue & Mulwa,2022). Therefore it is necessary for non-governmental, governmental and other organizations that fund the project to develop very comprehensive information management systems. These Organizations should consider having initial studies conducted in a participatory manner with project beneficiaries before implementation of the project (Matyoko,2019). By prioritizing sustainability and adaptability, development projects can navigate challenges, ensuring long-term positive outcomes while minimizing adverse impacts (Borisch, Amer & Jahaf, 2023).
CONCLUSION
Monitoring and evaluation is a critical project management practice that contributes significantly to project sustainability and overall performance. Through continuous tracking of project activities, assessment of progress, stakeholder involvement, and timely corrective actions, organizations are able to improve decision-making and enhance project outcomes. The study indicates that effective monitoring and evaluation promotes accountability, learning, adaptability, and efficient resource utilization, all of which are essential for sustaining project benefits beyond the implementation period. Therefore, organizations, governments, and development partners should strengthen monitoring and evaluation systems and encourage participatory approaches throughout the project cycle to enhance project sustainability and achieve long-term development goals.Â
